Grandad was a Cowboy - a ballad for Wilford Sheldon, Cowboy - 1895 to 1972.
Sweet Fire of Love - Life is difficult. The best we can do is be present and enjoy this moment.
Love is a Mountain - Feel the wonder of every day, every moment. Life is a miracle!
Fire in the Hole - A song about "The Company". A mining company moves into a town, builds political leverage on the promise of new wealth, and ultimately chews up the land and leaves.
Tenakee Gal - I spent a lot of time in this tiny Alaska village when I was crewing on a fishing boat in 1987.
5 Acres of Ground - I wrote this when we were looking to buy a piece of land. A month later we found our dream property - just as the song describes, only twice as big.
Hungry Man's Cove - Mom and dad would take the boat, dog, us kids, granddad and any visitors we could muster to a great little crabbing spot on the North Spit of Coos Bay, Oregon, for a cheap and super-fun summer outing.
The Roughage Queen - A love song for the Roughage Queen of Main Street.
Chichicastenango - A ballad about a Mayan village in the western highlands of Guatemala.
90% Angel - I fished five seasons in Bristol Bay, home to the world’s biggest remaining salmon runs. This ballad is about the sinking of the F/V 90% Angel – a boat that went down while we were within ear-shot of their “May Day” distress call. Every man in the fleet of a thousand or more boats was riveted to the radio.
